America's Poison Centers works with America's 55 Poison Centers to track poisonings and their sources, including household products, food and beverages, chemicals in the workplace and home, environmental toxins, drugs and medicine, and animal and insect bites and stings.

OPIOID (NARCOTIC)
PAIN MEDICATIONS

NPDS statistical analyses indicate that all analgesic exposures including opioids and sedatives are increasing year over year.

EDIBLE CANNABIS

Edible cannabis products are easily mistaken for regular food and beverage products. High amounts of THC in these products can cause serious harm when accidentally ingested by children.

Delta-8 THC
DELTA-8 THC 

An increasing number of products containing Delta-8 THC are being sold in legal hemp and marijuana markets. There has been an increasing number of exposures in both children and adults reported to U.S. Poison Centers.

GLP-1

GLP-1 agonist (i.e. semaglutide, Ozempic®) exposures reported to poison centers have increased nearly 1,500% since 2019 due to its increasing use for weight loss.

America's Poison Centers maintain the National Poison Data System (NPDS), the national database of information logged by America’s Poison Centers serving the District of Columbia and all U.S.’ states and territories. Case records in this database are from self-reported calls from health care professionals, emergency response personnel, and the public. As such:

  • NPDS data does not represent the complete incidence rate of national exposures to any substance(s)
  • NPDS data is subject to change due to continuous improvements to the database.
  • America's Poison Centers is unable to completely verify the accuracy of every report made to Poison Centers
